Hernández rates as one of the worst defenders in the majors this season. And yet there was Hernández manning shortstop on a daily basis this season as the Red Sox tried clawing into contention. When they signed Trevor Story a year later, they did not foresee Hernández being their primary shortstop at any point in the future. When the Red Sox signed Hernández in January 2021, fresh off his World Series run with the Dodgers, they did not expect he’d eventually be Xander Bogaerts’ replacement at shortstop. But this return is not the worst result for them, all things (especially his Baseball Reference page) considered. Nesbitt: Whatever the Red Sox envisioned for the Hernández era, it didn’t end like this. In exchange for Hernández, a pending free agent who wasn’t hitting, the Red Sox got a pair of middle-relief lottery tickets. Both pitchers compiled solid strikeout numbers in the minors, with Robertson striking out 13.3 batters per nine innings in Triple A and Hagenman striking out nearly 10 batters per nine innings. In return, Boston received a pair of minor-league relievers: Robertson, a 25-year-old righty who reached the majors earlier this year, and Hagenman, a 26-year-old righty who had been pitching at Triple-A Oklahoma City. He can play both middle infield positions, in addition to all three outfield spots. Even so, he could aid the Dodgers, who could use balance for a lineup that often features left-handed-hitting outfielders like Jason Heyward and David Peralta. Among the 145 players qualified for the batting title heading into Tuesday’s games, Hernández’s. But he has been ineffective against both right-handers and left-handers in 2023. The bigger question will be if he can hit.įor much of his Dodgers tenure, Hernández functioned as a platoon player, used mostly to hit against left-handed pitchers. Fitting into the Dodgers clubhouse and providing defensive utility for the team won’t be an issue for Hernández. ![]() The Dodgers know that as well as any team: Hernández spent six years in Los Angeles before signing with the Red Sox after the 2020 season. Well, Hernández is a right-handed hitter who can play the outfield, among myriad other positions. While Hernández is a fit for LA, there are other outfielders available that arguably fit better - guys who maybe don’t offer Hernández’s versatility but do possess an OPS that begins with a number higher than five.Īndy McCullough: The Dodgers were trawling the market for a right-handed-hitting outfielder. Check back periodically to see if your provider has been added. For both teams, my lingering question is: This isn’t all you’re gonna do for that, right? Boston has spelunked for useful reliever depth all season, but it can still use one more arm to operate late in games. Stay tuned!
